Performance Evaluation

General Evaluation:

Our performance was successful as the audience had clearly received the message. The comedic element of our performance was also achieved as we managed to get many laughs from the audience, especially from my sperm dance.

Positives

  • Comedic element was clear
  • message was received
  • Everyones acting was convincing
Negatives
  • Transitions could've been smoother
  • Elements were missing such as signs setting the scene

Message of our piece

The message of our piece might have been interpreted differently depending on the age of the audience.
  • Teachers - wanted them to think about them when/if they teach Sex Ed and how they teach.
  • Students - want them to relate and think if theyve been taught enough and if they feel they have enough knowledge.
  • Parents - if maybe they could also talk to their kids about it and not just leave it to the teachers

Breakthrough Rehearsal

In week 5 of rehearsal almost everything fell into place when we explored Reginas irresponsibility after the party with having unprotected sex this is where the whole plot and all of the narrative aspects made sense.

By exploring this scene where she had sex without a condom we hoped to send a message in a comical way, however in a way that our audience would remember. This message was simply to not forget to use condoms.

Later we hot seated regina with intention to figure out how she felt about being pregnant at such a young age, especially with such an abusive father. Some of the answers were what we expected but then she said a couple of interesting things. You can watch the hot seating below

Stimuli

For our devised piece we had quite a few stimuli, some of them being pictures and some being videos. One example of this is a picture of some schoolboys in some straw hats. This gave us the inspiration of gender roles in school. This lead to us doing some research and finding out that students in single-sex schools tend to do subjects and activities that wouldn’t be as acceptable in normal schools. Boys had a higher tendency to join choirs and girls did more sport. This then lead us to set our piece in a school (this would later change). And another inspiration we had a was a commercial called "This girl can" this gave us inspiration to create something to do with feminism. In the beginning we thought about switching roles so me and Neo played female characters and then the girls would play male characters. And we wanted it to be a comedy so we used a lot of stereotypes. This is also a bit satirical because our views was pro-feminism however our scenes were anti-feminist, hence making the audience think about the issue and realise its wrong.

We decided dump the idea of the opposite gender because we felt like we weren’t getting anywhere with the idea so we moved on to if the genders were switched. As an example, me and Isabel devised a scene where she, as a female would act like a man and I, still of the male gender, would act as a female and make Isabel food, stay at home while she’s at work etc. This didn’t make it either to the final performance, however it was a useful process to go through and definitely helped us for figuring out our final piece ideas.
